Deities & Demigods / Legends & Lore
1980, 1983 - James M. Ward & Robert J. Kuntz & Lawrence Schick - 144, 128 pages
TSR 2013 - ISBN 0935696229, 0880380500
The very earliest edition of the DDG had the Cthulhu and Melnibonean (Elric) gods, but these were pulled from later printings so TSR would not be trespassing on the licenses of the Chaosium company. Those editions command a higher price today.
The earliest printing has the 2 extra pantheons (17 as opposed to 15 later). Next printing has 17 also, but with a "Thanks" to Chaosium on page 4. Later printings removed the Elric/Cthulhu pantheons, but the thanks to Chaosium lingered for some time. It's tricky to tell from the exterior whether a DDG has the extra pantheons (The Wizard logo appears on both versions, though the TSR "Face" logo only appears on late printings. The printing that first removed the extra pantheons still erroneously claimed 17 on the back cover!). Page count is a reliable indicator: 144 pages before removal; 128 pages after.
"(THE) DEITIES & DEMIGODS CYCLOPEDIA PROVIDES THE DUNGEON MASTER WITH GODS, HEROES AND MONSTERS FROM MYTH, FICTION AND LEGEND FOR USE IN ROUNDING OUT AN ADVANCED D&D CAMPAIGN. WITHIN THIS BOOK ARE SEVENTEEN PANTHEONS OF DIVINITIES, EACH PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED. ALSO INCLUDED ARE NEW MATERIAL ON CLERICS' CONDUCT AND THEIR RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEIR DEITIES, INFORMATION ON CHARACTER MORTALITY AND IMMORTALITY, AND MORE!"
